Throughout his remarkable career, Jerry illustrated more than one hundred books and was renowned for his positive depictions of African American life. He earned countless accolades, including being the first individual Black winner of the Caldecott Medal in 2010, five Coretta Scott King Illustrator Awards, five Caldecott honors, two nominations for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, a 2014 Carle Honors Artists Award, the 2016 Coretta Scott King - Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement, the 2016 Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal (now the Children's Literature Legacy Award), a nomination for the 2018 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration, and most recently the 2020 Orbis Pictus Award. Additionally, Jerry was the first children's book illustrator elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, volunteered as an internationally-recognized proponent of , served as a member of the National Council on the Arts, and was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. For a number of years, he was the most artist in museums across the country. Jerry will likewise be remembered for his kindness, thoughtful advice, and mentorship.
